Arita-yaki Matcha Bowl by Shizan – Japanese Tea Ceremony Chawan | Vintage 1970s Pottery with Wooden Box
Regular price $30.00

This is a vintage Arita-yaki Matcha Bowl (Chawan), believed to be crafted by Shizan (梽山 / 檍山) — an artisan active possibly before the internet era, as little information remains about the artist today.
Judging from the aged wooden box and style, this piece likely dates back to the 1970s, and was originally purchased at a tea utensil shop or department store exhibition in Kamakura or Yokohama, Japan.

The bowl remains unused (未使用), having been carefully stored for decades. Though it was meant to be used in the tea ceremony, it has quietly rested in storage — now awaiting a new owner to bring it to life once again.

Its color palette is warm and elegant, featuring a subtle mix of reddish-brown, black, burnt umber, and silvery tones, evoking a serene autumn atmosphere.
The surface has a refined, slightly matte texture that reflects the natural beauty and depth of traditional Arita porcelain.

Ways to Use

Discover different methods to prepare and enjoy your matcha, from traditional ceremonies to modern variations.

Usucha Matcha: A popular, smooth, and frothy brew. This thin preparation highlights matcha's fresh flavor, perfect for daily enjoyment or informal tea ceremonies.

1

Warm up your tea bowl (Chawan) and whisk (Chasen)

Warming your matcha bowl and whisk (chasen) for 3 mins will help keep the bowl warm to maintain the ideal water temperature of 70-80°C during preparation, and it will also soften the whisk for better frothing.
