The Spirit of Fire and Earth: Handcrafted Japanese Aka-Raku Chawan

Experience the profound warmth and soul of classical Japanese tea ceremony with this authentic handcrafted Aka-Raku Chawan. Rooted in the 16th-century Kyoto Raku tradition pioneered by Sen no Rikyu, this exquisite tea bowl unites fiery terracotta hues with a dramatic, misty belt of charcoal and ash glaze—embodying the purest essence of Wabi-sabi.

Artisanal Craftsmanship & Aesthetics

  • Hand-Formed Organic Silhouette (Te-tsukune): Sculpted purely by hand without a mechanical potter’s wheel, the organic, undulating rim and soft finger impressions yield a vessel that rests with grounding comfort inside both palms.

  • Dramatic "Fire & Ash" Landscape (Keshiki): The vibrant, earthy vermilion glaze is embraced by a swirling sash of smoked charcoal and pale cloud-white glaze. In tea culture, this atmospheric pattern is revered as Keshiki (natural scenery)—a one-of-a-kind landscape formed by the alchemy of the kiln.

  • Breathtaking Contrast with Matcha: The warm terracotta interior provides the most dramatic, celebrated visual stage in chanoyu, allowing the vivid emerald-green froth of freshly whisked ceremonial matcha to glow with unmatched vibrancy.

  • Soft Thermal Touch: Low-fired earthenware possesses gentle porosity and excellent thermal buffering, keeping your tea comfortably warm while remaining soothing and pleasant to hold.

  • Authentic Artisan Seal Marks: Features traditional carved stamp impressions near the base, authenticating its handcrafted pedigree.

Collector’s Packaging

  • Original Wooden Box (Tomobako): Handcrafted Japanese cedar/paulownia storage box tied with traditional woven Sanada-himo ribbon.

  • Protective Cloth (Ukon-nuno): Wrapped in traditional fabric designed to shield heirloom ceramics from humidity, dust, and time.

Ways to Use

Discover different methods to prepare and enjoy your matcha, from traditional ceremonies to modern variations.

Usucha Matcha: A popular, smooth, and frothy brew. This thin preparation highlights matcha's fresh flavor, perfect for daily enjoyment or informal tea ceremonies.

1

Warm up your tea bowl (Chawan) and whisk (Chasen)

Warming your matcha bowl and whisk (chasen) for 3 mins will help keep the bowl warm to maintain the ideal water temperature of 70-80°C during preparation, and it will also soften the whisk for better frothing.
