A Momoyama Classic: Handcrafted Japanese E-Shino Matcha Chawan

Awaken your senses and enrich your daily tea practice with this authentic handcrafted E-Shino Chawan. Originating from the storied Mino kiln region in Gifu Prefecture, this tea bowl celebrates the revolutionary rustic elegance of Japan’s Momoyama period—where deliberate simplicity, thick snowy glazes, and iron brushwork defined the soul of Wabi-cha.

Artisanal Character & Aesthetics

  • Iconic Feldspathic Snow Glaze (Shino-yu): Coated in a luscious, semi-opaque milky glaze known for its soft, cloud-like texture, subtle micro-pinholes (Yuzuhada), and fine crackle network. Over time, matcha will gracefully seep into the fissures, cultivating an irreplaceable heirloom patina (Keshiki).

  • Abstract Iron-Oxide Motifs (E-Shino): Painted by hand using native iron-rich pigment (Oni-ita) beneath the glaze, creating earthy rust-and-charcoal geometric patterns that softly blur under the heat of the kiln.

  • Sturdy, Tactile Han-Tsutsu Profile: Upright, gently contoured walls nestle comfortably into both hands. The substantial stoneware body provides exceptional heat retention, keeping your tea at the perfect sipping temperature.

  • Exquisite Visual Contrast: The pale ivory-white interior serves as a pristine visual stage, accentuating the vibrant, jade-green foam of freshly whisked ceremonial matcha.

  • Raw Mogusa Clay Foot (Kodai): The unglazed base showcases the raw, pale earthen clay and dynamic hand-carved spiral, connecting every tea ritual directly to the earth.

Ways to Use

Discover different methods to prepare and enjoy your matcha, from traditional ceremonies to modern variations.

Usucha Matcha: A popular, smooth, and frothy brew. This thin preparation highlights matcha's fresh flavor, perfect for daily enjoyment or informal tea ceremonies.

1

Warm up your tea bowl (Chawan) and whisk (Chasen)

Warming your matcha bowl and whisk (chasen) for 3 mins will help keep the bowl warm to maintain the ideal water temperature of 70-80°C during preparation, and it will also soften the whisk for better frothing.
